Earning the title of non-commissioned officer is about more than a pay raise or a new piece of Velcro rank on a uniform. Non-commissioned officers are the backbone of the Army and are responsible for training and mentoring young soldiers to become strong, confident future leaders.

First Sgt. William Jones, Headquarters Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, Task Force Resolute, lights one of three candles during the non-commissioned officer induction ceremony May 11 on Kandahar Airfield. The red candle represents the past and the blood that was shed; the white candle represents the present and purity; and the blue candle represents the future and loyalty to our country.
