Ashley Ladeira (r) and Brandy Butler, American volunteers from the Stuttgart military/civilian community in Germany, place candles at 3,500 headstones at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial near the Argonne Forest in France Nov. 11, 2017 – which is Remembrance Day in France. Partially lit this year, the cemetery will be fully lit in September 2018 to commemorate the centennial of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Most of the 14,246 Americans buried at the cemetery died during the offensive, the longest-lasting battle of World War I.
