    U.S. 5th Fleet Sailors Celebrate Navy’s 242nd Birthday

    171013-N-YB753-0355 MANAMA, Bahrain (Oct. 13, 2017) Naval Support Activity Bahrain Commanding Officer Capt. Darren B. Guenther, cuts a ceremonial cake with Capt. Tom Walcott, the eldest Sailor, and Seaman Erica Pastramo, the youngest Sailor, during the 2017 Navy Ball in the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Manama, Bahrain. The Navy celebrates its 242nd birthday with this year’s theme being “Sea Power to Protect and Promote.” U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. The expanse is comprised of 20 countries and includes three critical choke points at the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal and the Strait of Bab al Mandeb at the southern tip of Yemen.
