ARABIAN GULF (Oct. 2, 2017) Capt. Mark Oberley delivers his farewell speech to his crew during a change of command ceremony aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72). Capt. Rob Thompson relieved Oberley as commanding officer of the ship during the ceremony. Vella Gulf is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
