A U.S. Army soldier in full combat uniform and body armor stands on an orange Husky ladder, appearing to inspect or sight down the barrel of a large artillery piece. The equipment is heavily weathered with peeling green paint and rust, suggesting it is an older or display piece. The setting appears to be an outdoor training or demonstration area with a treeline visible in the background.

U.S. Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Evan Putman, assigned to 1108th Ordnance Company at Glenville, N.Y., uses a long pole to determine the approximate location of a lodged artillery round inside the barrel of an old howitzer during the stuck round lane of the fifth annual Department of the Army level explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) Team of the Year competition, Sept. 12 at Fort A.P. Hill, Va. The week-long competition is part of a new initiative of the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps, called the U.S. Army Ordnance Crucible, which combines the results of this competition with two other competitions that were held at Fort Pickett. Those competitions were on ammunition transfer holding points (ATHP) and combat repair teams (CRT). The three unique competitions will provide an opportunity for senior leaders to assess ammunition, maintenance and EOD professionals across the institutional Army, operational force and individual leader development domains.
