U.S. Marines attached to Battalion Landing Team 3/8, Regimental Combat Team 8, launch the lofted communication balloon for tethered deployment at Combat Outpost Ouellette, Helmand province, Afghanistan, Feb. 8, 2011. This was the first use of lofted comms in support of Marine Corps operations. 26th MEU Marines have tested and refined the system in exercises since 2009. Elements of 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed to Afghanistan to provide regional security in Helmand province in support of the International Security Assistance Force.
