ATLANTIC OCEAN (Sept. 12, 2017) – U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) Midshipman 1st Class Nolan Brandon attaches a GoPro video camera onto a remotely operated vehicle in order to obtain video of the wreck of the World War I-era armored cruiser USS San Diego (ACR 6), Sept. 12. Members from the Naval History and Heritage Command, Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, the University of Delaware, the Office of Naval Intelligence, and a USNA midshipman started surveying the shipwreck to gain scientific insight, historical clarity, and in preparation for the 100th commemoration of the vessel’s sinking. San Diego was sunk off the coast of Long Island in 1918 by a German submarine. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Eric Lockwood/Released)
