ATLANTIC OCEAN (Sept. 11, 2017) – Ken Nahshon, Ph.D., (left), an engineer with Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD), George Schwarz, Ph.D., (center right), an underwater archaeologist with the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), and Alexis Catsambis, Ph.D., (right), also an underwater archaeologist with NHHC, discuss the wreck of World War I-era armored cruiser USS San Diego (ACR 6), Sept. 11. Members from NHHC, NSWCCD, the University of Delaware, the Office of Naval Intelligence, and a midshipman from the United States Naval Academy started surveying the shipwreck to gain scientific insight, historical clarity, and in preparation for the 100th commemoration of the vessel’s sinking. The project started with a side-scan sonar and bathometric survey. San Diego was sunk off the coast of Long Island in 1918 by a German submarine.
