The Armillary Sphere, an adopted symbol of the Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, points to the partial solar eclipse in the Schriever Courtyard of Los Angeles Air Force Base, El Segundo, Calif., Aug. 21, 2017. The sculpture was created by San Pedro artist, Jack Brogan, and commissioned by the Air Force Association to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Western Development Division, a precursor to SMC. The inner rings represent the Earth, while the outer rings represent the tracks of orbiting SMC satellites. The Space and Missile Systems Center experienced approximately 61 percent obscuration of the sun at 10:20 a.m. local time Aug. 21, 2017 in El Segundo, Calif. (U.S. Air Force photo by Sarah Corrice.)
