Elizabeth Gordon Ellyson Carmichael reaches to touch a functional replica of a Curtiss A-1 Triad seaplane as her son, Michael Carmichael, holds her wheelchair. Carmichael is the daughter of Lt. Theodore Gordon Ellyson, the Navy's first aviator, who flew in a Curtiss A-1 Triad, the first aircraft purchased by the Navy 100 years ago. Several members of the Ellyson family are attending the Centennial of Naval Aviation Open House and Parade of Flight event on Feb. 12. The Navy is observing the Centennial of Naval Aviation with a series of nationwide events celebrating 100 years of heritage, progress and achievement in naval aviation.
