Student interns (from left to right: William Delano, Xavier Arguello, Evan Goldberg, Julia Weber and Trevor Conklin) temporarily assigned to Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division's Disruptive Technology Laboratory (DTL) under the Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) and Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) assemble a hydro-jet fire suppression system they are working on as a team project for the next version of the Optionally Manned Technology Demonstrator (OMTD) in West Bethesda, Md., July 21. The DTL and other entities within Carderock regularly host interns from SEAP and NREIP under the sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research as part of the command's science, technology, mathematics and engineering outreach efforts. The DTL, along with the rest of the OMTD team, received a 2017 Naval Sea Systems Command Commander's Award for Innovation July 19 for its work in producing the most recent OMTD proof-of-concept hull, the largest additively manufactured naval asset to date, and the work of these interns could be incorporated into the next version of OMTD.
