A U.S. military aviator in a tan flight suit is seated in an aircraft cockpit at night, reaching up to manipulate an overhead switch or control illuminated in red. The cockpit is filled with numerous illuminated instruments and displays, and through the windscreen, airport or airfield lights are visible in the darkness. The American flag patch on the pilot's right shoulder identifies this as a U.S. Armed Forces crew member.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Ken Lavin, 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, conducts pre-flight checks before a mission to transport passengers in support of Operation Enduring Freedom at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, Jan. 3. C-130s are able to land on runways that many other cargo aircraft are unable to, making them invaluable when moving passengers and cargo.
