(Jun. 19, 2017) Chief Quartermaster Gregory Flowers from the guided-missile destroyer USS Stout (DDG 55) types a message during a demonstration of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) TechSolutions-sponsored Flashing Light to Text Converter (FLTC). Using the ship's existing signal lamp outfitted with a camera and liquid crystal shutter, the FLTC both sends and receives optical lamp communications via an intuitive chat session on a tablet computer.
