Sgt. Dillon Thomas, survey non-commissioned officer (NCO) with the Oklahoma National Guard’s 63rd Civil Support Team (CST), puts on his gear before assessing a notional chemical spill in Weatherford, Oklahoma, during the CST’s 18-month evaluation, June 27, 2017. Evaluators from U.S. Army North stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, gave CST members a scenario where they had to enter the building after a notional chemical spill, find the contaminated area, test the substance, provide feedback to their leadership and assess what to do from there based on their findings. The CST’s overall mission is to support civil authorities during domestic incidents by identifying Chemical, Biological, Nuclear, and Radiological (CBRN) agents/substances, assessing current and projected consequences, advising on response measures, and assisting with requests for additional support.
