U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Derek Sine, a hospitalman with Robert M. Casey Medical and Dental Clinic, plants a rose in honor and reverence of all prisoners of war and missing in action from all U.S. military services during the 119th Hospital Corpsman Ball at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, June 16, 2016. The rose symbolizes hope of the family members who await their return. A slice of lemon symbolizes the prisoners’ bitter fate if never brought home. The salt on the plate represents the tears shed by family members, and the glass turned upside down represents the prisoners’ inability to toast with everyone else. The burning candle symbolizes the everlasting hope for a joyous reunion with those yet accounted for, and the red ribbon is a symbol of those who will not return home.
