Petty Officer 1st Class Reed Gonzales, quartermaster, assigned to the navigation department, uses flashing light to communicate with ships assigned to Carrier Strike Group 1 from the signal bridge of the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson during a simulated straits transit. Carl Vinson and Carrier Air Wing 17 are on a three-week composite training unit exercise to be followed by a deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.
