ASAN, Guam (May 25, 2017) Members assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 1 mark the locations for memorial flags in support of Guam’s Memorial Day Celebration at Asan Beach, Guam, May 25, 2017. There will be 3,050 U.S. and Guam flags placed at Asan Beach to honor the sacrifice made on Guam during World War II. Each U.S. flag represents one of the 1,880 U.S. service members that sacrificed their lives to liberate Guam, and each Guam flag represents the 1,170 Chamorro people who lost their lives during Japanese occupation and battle for Guam. NMCB 1 is forward deployed to execute construction, humanitarian and foreign assistance, special operations combat service support, and theater security cooperation in support of U.S. Pacific Command.
