170519-N-FX680-007 KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (May 19, 2017) A Navy representative retrieves compressed plastic disks and an unidentified white barrel that washed ashore during April and May from a local resident at the Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue Center. The Navy will examine the disks and the barrel as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident. Under Navy policy and environmental regulations, naval ships are prohibited from discharging plastic in the ocean. Sailors are trained and instructed to separate all plastic products for processing, then retain the disks onboard until they can be properly disposed of ashore. The Navy is committed to being a good steward of the environment, and has sent a message to afloat units reiterating and reinforcing the Navy's policy and regulations with respect to plastics at sea.
