Retired Marine Sgt. Michael F. Van Houtte has a Bronze Star with ‘V’ device for Valor presented to him by retired Marine Col. Willard Buhl, former commanding officer of 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., April 21, 2017. Van Houtte received the award for his heroic achievement, 50 years ago today, in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving as a Squad Leader when he was a Lance Corporal with Company M, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division in Vietnam.
