U.S. Air Force Maj., William "Kidd" Poteet, an instructor at the Air Force Academy, adjusts his shoe as he speeds by the crowd after transitioning from the water to the bike while competing in the Iron Man Triathlon World Championship, Oct. 9, while at Kona-Kailua, Hawaii. The grueling race is both a mentally and physically challenging event. The competitors must complete a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike race and then finish with a 26 mile marathon all in one day. The race takes place Oct. 9 and has more than 1,800 competitors.
