AUSTIN – (March. 22, 2017) Katy, Texas native, Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Juan Rodriguez of Navy Recruiting Station San Marcos presented a Navy Fiesta Medal to 98-year-old WWII Veteran Chief Petty Officer Shelby H. Highsmith during Navy Week Austin at the Navy’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) TOUR 1, the “NIMITZ”, featured at the Rodeo Austin and Stock Show. Highsmith, a native of Mt. Vernon, Ill., and resident of Austin, joined the Navy in 1939 as an aviation machinist’s mate servicing the PBY Catalina aircraft. He also served as a Navy recruiter in Phoenix in the mid 1950’s. Highsmith will celebrate his 99th birthday on March 28, 2017. Ending March. 24, Austin Navy Week is the 2nd of 15 Navy Weeks in 2017 which focus a variety of assets, equipment, and personnel on a single city for a weeklong series of engagements designed to bring America's Navy closer to the people it protects.
