A single-engine plane crashed in a field at approximately 4:30 p.m. in Morganton, N.C., on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017. Within minutes of the crash, North Carolina Army National Guard Sgt. Charles Roper was pulling the pilot from the burning cockpit. Roper saw the plane crash and immediately put his truck into 4WD, driving through ditches and farmland to get to the crash site.
