Spc. Brett Alkire, a machinist/welder with the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Ga., places steel saddles he created into a trench at Fort Jackson's Central Issue Facility Feb. 7. The saddles would provide support for 1/4 inch steel plates that would bridge large trenches in the building. Without the support the weight of forklifts would buckle the plates.
