Soldiers of Mortar Platoon, 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiment launch mortars at fixed targets on a range at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center in central Indiana Aug. 31. These Massachusetts National Guard soldiers are training to provide security for provincial reconstruction teams in Afghanistan. The unit is made up of roughly 600 soldiers, the Massachusetts National Guard’s largest troop deployment since World War II.
