The Honorable Robert M. Gates, secretary of defense, presents the Purple Heart certificate to Gunnery Sgt. David Rohde before visiting wounded, ill and injured (WII) service members at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Gates also walked through the Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care facility, which manages severely WII patients from medical evacuation through inpatient care, outpatient rehabilitation, and eventual return to active duty or transition from the military.
