Sgt. Thomas Ascher, a soldier with the 196th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, South Dakota Army National Guard, qualifies with the German G36 service rifle July 30, 2010, at a range near Camp Alamo in Kabul, Afghanistan, while 1st Lt. Johannes Metzger, German Armed Forces Technical Advisory Group, watches on. Ascher earned a silver badge overall in the Schutzenschnur. The soldiers score is determined by a point system. The outside white section of the target is five points, the yellow section is eight points and the inner white portion is 10 points. Once the points are added up, soldiers qualify with a bronze (150-199 points), silver (200-249) or gold (250-300 points) badge.
