A customized classic American car, appearing to be a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air in blue and silver two-tone paint with chrome wheels, is parked on a military airfield tarmac. Behind it sits a U.S. Air Force KC-135 tanker aircraft bearing the markings of the 185th Iowa Air Guard. The image appears to be a deliberate promotional or commemorative photograph pairing the classic car with the military aircraft.

The Boeing Aircraft KC-135 Stratotanker turned 60 this year. In 1956 the jet age was coming of age and designers in Detroit were mimicking what was being produced in Seattle. Cars were faster, designers added items like wings, wrap around windows, turbines and even afterburner tail lights for decoration. Because of proper maintenance many automobiles like the 56 Chevy and aircraft like the KC-135, are still flying down the road and in the air today. (Illustrative)
