A Marine walks through a spray of water as he reaches the beat-the-bridge point during the 41st Marine Corps Marathon Oct. 30, in Washington. The beat-the-bridge point was the 18-mile mark in the marathon and the intersection of the 14th Street Bridge and Independence Avenue. Participants in the marathon had to reach this point by 1:15 p.m., otherwise they would not be allowed to finish the race due to traffic being allowed to go through the intersection at that time.
