Retired Maj. Scotty Smiley addresses an audience Sept. 19 as he tells the story of his platoon’s convoy in Mosul when personnel encountered a roadside bomber. In 2005, members of Scotty’s platoon were injured when the suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device. Smiley is completely blind with no light perception, but he can navigate his environment so well that many people do not at first realize he is blind. (Spc. Elizabeth Payne, 1st Inf. Div.
