Map of the City’s Defenses: The line of defense around Vicksburg as designed and constructed consisted of nine major forts connected by a continuous line of rifle-pits. The line was anchored on the Mississippi river above and below the city and guarded all land access to Vicksburg. This 1929 map of the Vicksburg National Military Park shows Confederate defenses in red, and Union siege lines in black, forming a crescent surrounding the city. (Library of Congress)
