NEW YORK – Capt. Michael Day, commander Sector New York, speaks to the crowd gathered at the Fort Wadsworth Overlook on Staten Island, New York, on September 11, 2016, to memorialize the tragic events 15 years ago. During the terrorist attacks, Capt. Day was the Coast Guard’s on-scene commander and he played a vital role in the evacuation of lower Manhattan, and helped coordinate the response of over 100 civilian vessels in evacuating over 500,000 people in 9 hours.
