Incoming first-year students, or swabs, arrive for “Reporting-In Day,” or R-Day, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn., June 27, 2016. This year’s incoming class of 312 swabs is made up of 38 percent women and 33 percent underrepresented minorities. The incoming Class of 2020 has the highest female enrollment in the Academy’s history. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the acceptance of women at the U.S. military academies. Women from the Academy’s Class of 1980 attended the swearing-in of the swabs at R-Day. Reporting-In Day marks the start of Swab Summer, an intense, seven-week training program designed to transform civilians into military men and women prepared for the challenges of being an officer in the Coast Guard.
