U.S. Marine Cpl. David Hernandez and his special search dog Ella prepare to jump into a UH-1Y Huey helicopter at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, as part of a a vehicle interdiction exercise on April 22, 2016. During this training, Hernandez and Ella inspected vehicles for explosives after mock enemy combatants were removed from the vehicles by reconnaissance Marines with the Maritime Raid Force, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. Prior to each deployment, the 31st MEU is thoroughly trained in a number of unique capabilities during a fast-paced workup cycle. This type of training allows the 31st MEU to be continually ready, even while the MEU is in garrison on Okinawa. Hernandez is a Military working dog handler with 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force and is from San Francisco, California. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Jorge A.
