Lance Cpl. William D. Hyden, a 21-year-old Marine from Little Rock, Ark., says life at the Marine's outpost near the Iraqi-Syrian border is not so bad. Here, Marines from the Twenty-nine Palms, Calif.-based 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment begin - Hyden's unit - work on a construction project on their outpost May 15, 2006. When the Marines are not conducting security patrols with Iraqi soldiers or interacting with local Iraqis, Hyden, says the best retreat from the 100-degree sun is in his "hooch," or living space, where his platoon has recently acquired a much needed commodity - air conditioning. Despite the occasional threat of mortar attacks against the outpost, Hyden feels safe around what he calls the "best non-commissioned-officers in the company." He's looking forward to his sister's home-cooked meals upon the battalion's return to the U.S. in September. (Photo by Cpl. Antonio Rosas)
