Nepalese Army Lt. Col. Bhuwan Purna Satyal, commander Bhairab infantry battalion, briefs his experiences in disaster response coordination during the exercise Gobi Wolf 2016 academic day training in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, April 3, 2016. Satyal was the Director of Military Operations last year when Nepal suffered a severe series of earthquakes and coordinated military response to the disaster. The academic day provided all participants with baseline knowledge in disaster management topics including national, international and military coordination processes, emergency communications infrastructure and capabilities, and strategic communications methodology. The fifth iteration of Gobi Wolf since 2009, this year’s exercise centers on earthquake disaster response and is designed to build competence in the interagency readiness that is vital to preventing unnecessary loss of life and ease human suffering after a disaster. Mongolia partners participating in Gobi Wolf 2016 include the U.S. Embassy in Mongolia, the British Embassy in Mongolia, U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Agency for International Development – Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, U.S. Pacific Command including U.S. Army Pacific and U.S. Army Alaska, the Alaska National Guard, the United Nations, and representatives from the militaries of Nepal, Korea and Japan.
