Seaman Apprentice Jose Rodriguez measures the interior diameter of one of USS George Washington's catapult cylinders. Commonly called a "Christmas tree," Rodriguez uses the instrument to ensure that the cylinder is the exact shape needed to safely launch aircraft. George Washington, the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, is currently in a Selective Restricted Availability in its homeport of Fleet Activities Yokosuka.
