U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. David H. Berger converses with Maj. Gen. Shinichi Aoki, Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations) with Western Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, about training exercises taking place during Exercise Iron Fist 2016 at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Feb. 17, 2016. This is the 11th iteration of the exercise, which continues to provide unique opportunities for the U.S. Marines to train with their Pacific ally on U.S. soil. Iron Fist is an annual, bilateral amphibious training exercise designed to improve USMC and JGSDF’s ability to plan, communicate and conduct combined amphibious operations at the platoon, company and battalion levels.
