The rotor wash of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter spins smoke from flares Jan. 9 in Sharkari Bagh, Afghanistan, as the aircraft brings in building materials for a new combat outpost in the Arghandab river valley. Nearly a dozen combat outposts have been built in the district as part of an effort to bring security and rule of law to the districts around Kandahar City.
