The Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star breaks ice around the motor vessel Ocean Giant and the National Science Foundation’s McMurdo Station, Antarctica, ice pier Feb. 2, 2016. During Operation Deep Freeze 2016, the U.S. military’s logistical support of the NSF-managed U.S. Antarctic Program, the Polar Star broke a channel from the open ocean to McMurdo Station for supply vessels.
