Soldiers carrying the guidons of eight Maine Army National Guard units, as well as the University of Southern Maine Reserve Officer Training Corps, wind their way along Back Cove Trail in Portland in the early morning of Oct. 4, 2015. Setting off on the first leg of the 10th Annual Maine Marathon Tribute March, 38 Soldiers and 11 Cadets stepped off on the 26.2 mile ruck march in memory of the 95 Maine service members who have been killed in action since the beginning of the global war on terror in 2001. The physically demanding event is one of memorial, during the last 2 miles to the finish line, the marching group is joined by the family members of fallen Maine service members to send a message, not only to the families, but to everyone who sees procession; the fallen are not forgotten.
