Using tobacco “harms readiness by impairing physical fitness and by increasing illness, absenteeism, premature death, and health care costs,” according to Army Regulation 600-63, chapter 7 section 2a. Furthermore, AR 600-63 states, “Readiness is enhanced by promoting the standard of a tobacco-free environment that supports abstinence from, and discourages the use of, any tobacco product.” Nov. 19 is the Great American Smokeout, a day meant to encourage people to quit smoking.
