An aged and deteriorating wooden boat frame, likely a traditional umiak or similar Arctic/subarctic vessel, rests upside-down on a wooden storage rack in an open field of dry grass. The skeletal ribbed structure has lost most of its skin covering, with only remnants of hide or canvas visible at the edges. In the background, modest residential buildings typical of a remote northern community are visible.

The skeleton of a boat sits on a rack in Savoonga, Alaska, Oct. 16. Volunteers from approximately 30 groups and organizations came together to bring holiday cheer to the village of Savoonga during Operation Santa Claus. This year marks the 59th year of the program, which serves to bring Christmas to underserved, remote villages across Alaska each year. (U.S. National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Edward Eagerton)
