Retired Sgt. 1st Class Paul Biery, who retired after 23 years of service in the Army to Columbia, S.C., stops on the pier at Semmes Lake to survey the damage done when the dam collapsed after a historic two days of rainfall totaling 24 inches. Biery, who has been coming off and on to Semmes Lake since 1980 to feed the ducks a few pieces of bread, originally attended basic combat training at Fort Jackson in 1957 and said he had never experienced a rain as heavy as the one on Oct. 3 and 4.
