A team of experts from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, led by Col. Peter Weina, chief of research for WRNMMC, traveled to Fort Hood, Texas, Sept. 25 to teach medics and health care professionals from across the 1st Cavalry Division about diseases from tropical regions of the world. Dubbed the Tropical Medicine Course, students learned about diseases which are common to tropical areas, and their treatments. “It’s kind of like weapons familiarization of tropical medicine; we are not going to make snipers out of them, but at least they know which way to point the gun,” said Weina. “What we want to do is introduce them to it and sensitize them to some of the issues.” (U.S. Army photo by Sgt.
