A CH-53E Super Stallion from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, also known as Pegasus, approaches Boondocker Training area aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii after conducting aerial radiological surveillance, Sept. 2, 2015. Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Marines with Marine Aircraft Group 24 aboard the helicopter were conducting simulated tests of radiation levels while flying over the training area. During the training mission, a simulated detonation of highly enriched uranium radiological dispersal device was performed and the Marines needed to locate the presence of gamma radiation prior to the arrival of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. Training like this directly supports the mission of MCB Hawaii by sustaining combat readiness while utilizing the base’s capabilities to its full potential. “In the event of an actual CBRN incident, our Reconnaissance Surveillance and Decontamination Team would be called to locate contamination, mark off the contaminated areas and report their findings back to higher headquarters,” said Cpl. Sabira Gannie, CBRN noncommissioned officer with MAG-24 and Seattle native. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Brittney Vito/Released)
