New York Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Marlana Watson presents her New York State Medal for Valor, the state's highest military honor, to her son Lassan Green, 6, Aug. 19, 2015, after Major General Patrick Murphy, the adjutant general of New York, presented it to her at the Farmingdale, N.Y., Armed Forces Reserve Center. Watson was honored for her actions on Nov. 5, 2015, when she rushed out of her house to provide medical treatment to two victims of a drive-by shooting, despite not knowing whether or not the shooter would continue to fire.
