Rct. Kenneth A. Powers, Platoon 2082, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, sidesteps across a rope on a Confidence Course obstacle Aug. 17, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. This obstacle requires recruits to sidestep across a rope without falling into the pond beneath. Powers, 18, from Sarasota, Fla., is scheduled to graduate Oct. 23, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
