Rct. Felipe A. Gonzalez, Platoon 2081, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, falls into a pond on the Confidence Course Aug. 17, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. This obstacle requires recruits to slide down a rope in three different positions without falling into the pond beneath. The course is comprised of 15 obstacles designed to help Marine Corps recruits build confidence by overcoming physical challenges. Gonzalez, 19, from Bridgeport, Pa., is scheduled to graduate Oct. 23, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
