    3d U.S. Infantry Regiment “The Old Guard”

    The Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 3d United States Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), perform a dignified transfer of U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. Stephen V. Biezis at Reagan National Airport, Va., Aug. 12, 2015. Biezis served in the 575th Bombardment Squadron, 391st Bombardment Group, 9th Air Force in Germany during World War II. On Dec. 23, 1944, his B-26c Marauder was shot down by enemy fire while on a mission near Ahrweiler, Germany. On Aug. 6, 2015, it was announced by the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency that remains recovered in Bettenfeld, Germany, belonged to Lt. Biezis. Of the 16 million Americans who served during WWII, over 73,000 remain unaccounted however Lt. Biezis has now been returned to his family and will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. (U.S. Army Photos by Spc. Cody W. Torkelson)
