The 1974 floods in Bangladesh intensified that country's food shortages. The government of Bangladesh, in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development, adopted a Food for Work program to stimulate food production, feed hungry people and provide jobs. By reclaiming land, rehabilitating canals to permit irrigation of dry land and expanding and improving flood control, the program will enable Bangladesh to reduce its dependence on outside food sources. AID is cooperating in this effort by financing food and nutrition programs, the purchase of fertilizers and pesticides, the construction of a fertilizer plant and the relocation of the Agricultural Research Institute.
